Rocks of the West

Dimensions variable, archival pigment prints, silver gelatin prints, wood panels, found objects, 2022

Rocks, much like photographs, are not inert objects but testaments to action. They are evidence of past events where meaning is assigned based on their form and context. As physical manifestations of histories, these seemingly inanimate and overlooked objects have a fascinating story to tell and can embody a mystical power.

Combining a variety of photographic styles and formats, along with images from both public and personal archives and actual found objects, Rocks of the West is a multifaceted installation piece that explores the physical dimensionality of a photograph while also investigating the interrelationships between art and science, macro, and micro worlds and subjective vs. objective perception. The title, Rocks of the West, is a literal, geographical reference to place but also a reference to the quantitative and objective notions of Western science and knowledge. While adopting these methods of observation and classification, I aim to create an installation piece that encourages multiple entry points and readings, where interrelationships are formed from disparate parts, meaning is fluid and ultimately indeterminate.
